Kathy Clare - Ceramicist
Studio 10
Kathy Clare is a ceramic artist based in the Cotswolds. Her creative path began in her twenties, working with a goldsmith in London’s Covent Garden, where she designed bespoke jewellery and developed her eye for fine detail. Later in life, she pursued Fine Art, graduating with a BA in 2018 and an MA in 2021 from Cheltenham University.
Her jewellery and lighting are inspired by her surroundings of beautiful Cotswold cottages, floral gardens and ever-changing sessional views, these dreamlike surroundings.
Her lighting was also inspired by her study for her master's. ‘Poetics of Space’ by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard further inspired her, showing the importance of home and the spaces within them; the corners we occupy, cocooned by familiar furniture and objects which make the space our own. The flicker of light from a candle or open fire that shines from within, projecting out into the darkness, giving a feeling of warmth and homeliness to those that pass. Home is so important to us, whether that's our childhood house or where we are now. A realisation that led the way for Kathy to become a maker and designer of ornamental lighting. 'My style is unique in my lighting; I have developed my own skills by experimenting with materials and process. My timings are key to achieving translucency in the porcelain walls of my lamps, which are then hand painted in delicate floral patterns using ceramic pigments, lustres and glass.
