Being and Becoming is a series of abstract paintings by Adam Cartwright rooted in the sensory experience of being in nature. The works explore ideas of connection, interdependence, and renewal, reflecting on our place within continual cycles of change.
The paintings begin without a fixed destination. Through intuitive mark-making, layering and experimentation, each work gradually develops its own rhythm. There is an interest in the way a painting can hold traces of its own history, as layers reveal moments of decision, uncertainty, movement, and renewal.
Rather than depicting a specific place or moment, the paintings invite a slower way of looking. The work is influenced by the experience of being immersed in the landscape and noticing the subtle relationships and how contrasting elements can exist together. Stillness and movement. Emergence and dissolution. Growth and decay. The compositions often guide the eye through circular and shifting movements, creating a sense of flow and return that echo the cycles of renewal found in the natural world.
